How does the price vary?

The price is influenced by the contribution of renewable energy. If it’s very windy, we have a lot of wind power; if there’s more sunshine, we have more solar power; if there’s more rain, we have more hydroelectric power. The greater the contribution of renewable energy, the lower the price of energy.

⁽¹⁾ The prices shown do not include the Network Access Fees set by ERSE (Energy Services Regulatory Authority) for the year 2026. Terms valid through September 30, 2026, subject to a 12-month commitment, with enrollment in electronic billing and direct debit.

MEO Energia offers a contract-free plan:

• Under the Fixed Rate plan, the energy price (excluding the Network Access Fee) is €0.2000/kWh.
• Under the Dynamic Rate, the formula for calculating the energy price is the same as that for the Loyalty Rate, but a K value of €0.030/kWh is applied.

The prices for contracted capacity, peak-hour capacity, and reactive power correspond to the Network Access Tariffs set by ERSE (the Energy Services Regulatory Authority) for the year 2026.

Under the Fixed Rate plan, the component corresponding to the additional cost associated with the auction of the Manually Activated Frequency Restoration Reserve Band will be applied to your bill, in accordance with ERSE Directive No. 12/2023, dated November 28, 2023, and other laws and regulations applicable to the mFRR Band.

To the amount of the invoice are added fees and taxes defined by the Portuguese State, namely: the special tax on the consumption of electricity (IEC) and the value added tax (VAT), and other charges or contributions provided for by law at the time the invoice is issued.

Calculation of the energy price (€/kWh)

_PENERGY = (_POMIE + CG) × (1 + FP) + K

If, after applying the formula, the result is negative, the energy price of €0 will be applied to the time period in which this occurs.

Where:

_PENERGIA: Energy price (€/kWh), valid every 15 minutes.

_POMIE: Represents the cost of electricity (€/kWh) within the Iberian market in Portugal (OMIE PT), corresponding to the consumption period, considered in time intervals that coincide with the market time units (MTU) made available to participants in the daily market. Prices available for consultation at www.omie.es/pt.

CG (Management Cost). This includes the costs associated with managing the system's operations, as well as the costs related to deviations from TV Guide , calculated in 15-minute intervals.

FP (Loss Factor): An adjustment factor for losses in the low-voltage grid, calculated for every 15 minutes of consumption, applied in accordance with the factors approved by ERSE (Energy Services Regulatory Authority).

K: 0.015€/kWh. Includes the sales margin, the cost of guarantees of origin, and other sales costs.

The energy price, calculated using the formula above, will be multiplied by the quarter-hourly (15-minute) consumption from the load profiles provided by the distributor to determine the energy cost.

Monthly total to be billed:

The energy price used for billing purposes shall be the sum of the energy costs for all quarter-hourly periods, divided by the total consumption as reported by the Distributor, plus the amount of the Network Access Tariffs.

The total amount due for electricity is the electricity rate multiplied by total consumption.

In addition to the cost of energy, the invoice includes fees and taxes set by the Portuguese government, specifically the special tax on electricity consumption (IEC) and value-added tax (VAT), as well as other charges or contributions required by law at the time the invoice is issued. Where applicable, the invoice may also include costs for other services.
